Cher: We Must Not Forget Trayvon Martin!

CherCher is one of many celebrities who are calling for police to arrest a Florida man accused of murdering an unarmed teenager last month.

17 year old black teenager Trayvon Martin was shot to death in a gated community on 26 February after self-
proclaimed "neighbourhood watch captain" George Zimmerman alerted police to the boy's "suspicious" behaviour.

During the 911 call, Zimmerman told the police dispatcher that the teenage boy, who
was carrying an iced-tea drink and a pack of 'Skittles', was "just walking around looking about". He began to pursue the unarmed boy against the explicit instructions of the officer and allegedly gunned him down.

Zimmerman has not been charged with any crime.

Celebrities have been campaigning for justice on social-networking site 'Twitter', demanding action from authorities, with many of them publicising an online petition created by the boy's parents.

Legendary entertainer Cher tweeted, "We must not forget Trayvon Martin! This beautiful young man was murdered In Florida and his killer was set free without even a drug test! Shame!"

Nine-time Grammy Award-winning Singer John Legend said, "We're p--sed because no one should get killed with impunity because they 'look suspicious' (are black with a hoodie). Murder is illegal. If you get caught you go to prison. This is egregious because the guy is comfortably sitting at home".

Concerned "Rosemary's Baby" actress Mia Farrow wrote, "My 20 year old son is African American. He sometimes wears a hoodie and he loves Skittles.", before concluding with the hashtag "#justice4trayvon".

Movie Director Spike Lee, 'Def Jam' record label co-founder Russell Simmons, 'Eardrum' rapper Talib Kweli and 'Bad Boys II' actress Gabrielle Union have also been tweeting about the shooting, urging their fans to join the petition that's demanding the arrest of Zimmerman.

'Contactmusic' has reported that "The public outrage at Martin's murder prompted officials at the FBI and the Justice Department to launch an investigation into the shooting on Monday, while Florida State Attorney Norm Wolfinger announced on Tuesday that the case will be heard by a grand jury."

With over 620,000 signatures, the petition can be found here.

Rest In Peace Trayvon Martin.
